Maria Fiore, Cafe Fiore

Food, food, food, what else can I say, it is one of Gods greatest creations.  It has always been a passion of mine ever since I can remember.  I was born to Italian Immigrants who instilled in me the importance of family first, traditions next and the importance of good eating last.  Southern Italian cooking was a way of life in our household.  My father worked for an Italian cheese company and my mom was a seamstress, so when an Italian deli was for sale, the natural progression for my father was to buy the deli.  My sister and I have worked in the deli from our early teens, learning the ins and outs of how to run a business and how to make great food.  We made everything from scratch, from our sauces to our pork sausages.  Selling the deli in 1999, I went to work at Padri Restaurant in Agoura Hills, first as hostess, then as General Manager, where I learned how to run the daily operations of the restaurant business.  A great learning experience that propelled me into buying my own restaurant. With the help of my sister, and two other partners we opened Cafe Fiore.

Cafe Fiore opened in October of 2003 to a very receptive Ventura community.  With the help of my sister, we have successfully brought our Italian traditions to fruition, from the food to the wine.  We have incorporated a very simple formula to our restaurant, the three essentials to any restaurant: great food, great service and great ambiance. Our restaurant runs like a large Italian family, we respect our workers and it is reciprocated by all our employees.  I periodically go to Italy to learn about all the new food movements and try to incorporate new ideas in our menu on a daily basis.

Ed Warren, Busy Bee Cafe - founding board member

Ed Warren has led an amazing and fulfilling life. Born in the coal mining town of Wilkes-Barre, PA Ed moved to Los Angeles in 1946. Hilda and Ed moved up to Ventura in 1963 and opened the first Warren’s Restaurant at the site of the current Busy Bee. Ed bought and opened the Santa Clara house in 1971 which has since been occupied as the Greenhouse, Andy’s Barbecue Heaven, Seafood & Beverage Company, Smokey’s, Joe Daddy’s, Landmark 78, and now the Candlelight. Along the way Ed and Hilda opened a chain of restaurants in LA and Orange Counties known as Longfellows but always came back home to Ventura.

Ed is somewhat retired at this point, but he and Hilda participate in many cultural-related events and organizations in Ventura and are a fixture in the downtown, as they have been for almost 50 years.
